Pardon me if this is a lot. There's a lot of details to this story and I'm just going to talk about maybe 20% of them. My church recently leased a building that used to be a rock club, and I've been the general contractor on the job. We're finally nearing the end of construction, but the landlord of the building has been driving us crazy, and I believe it's finally hit a point where we may need to get a lawyer involved. When we first acquired the space 8 months ago, part of the lease agreement stated that we were taking the building as is, and would have to bring it up to code, and clean all the mess the previous tenants left, including putting the unfinished enormous basement back to raw concrete and broom swept. It took over 5 30 yard dumpsters to clear the basement out, the entire place was an absolute filthy death trap, and electric was basically run with extension cords. We filed with the town, got plans from an architect, and went ahead with construction. Framing, plumbing, electrical inspections have all passed, and we are getting very close to finishing.
